The launch of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology was celebrated on Friday 24 April 2015 at a ceremony presided over by the Honourable Sir Dr Puka Temu, the Minister for Public Service, and attended by over 140 stakeholders and community members.

“Today marks a new dawn for the higher and technical education sector,” said Sir Dr Temu.

“The challenges facing the sector are not insignificant, but neither are their aspirations. So, today, we display the will of the Government to make sure that the people of PNG can, and will, make a massive contribution to the future welfare of the nation.”

To mark the event, the National Higher and Technical Education Plan 2015-2024 was also presented to the audience and is now available to the public.

“This is a home-grown plan that will serve as a guide map for the next ten years for all of those involved in the sector,” Acting Secretary, Professor David Kavanamur, said.

“It was developed after much consultation with our universities and colleges, and represents their aspirations in terms of the contribution they believe they can make towards the future of PNG.”

The Department has also begun its first year of operations with a three-year corporate plan that was developed by staff late last year.
